About the Palo Alto Networks Certification Program

Everything you need to know about the restructured 2025–2026 Palo Alto Networks certification framework before choosing your study path.

The Role-Based Certification Framework

In 2025, Palo Alto Networks completely restructured its certification program from a product-centric model to a role-based framework. Legacy credentials including PCCET, PCNSA, PCNSE, PCCSE, PCDRA, PCSAE, and PCSFE were retired — replaced by certifications that map directly to real job functions. The current program is organized into four levels across three tracks.

The four certification levels are Foundational (validating conceptual knowledge), Professional (validating operational and management skills), Specialist (validating hands-on deployment and management of a specific product), and Architect (validating the ability to design secure enterprise architectures at scale). These levels span three tracks: Network Security, Security Operations, and Cloud Security.

Exam Format (All Certifications)

Testing method: All exams are delivered in person at authorized Pearson VUE test centers. Online remote proctoring is no longer available as of August 2025.

Question types: Multiple-choice, matching, and ordering formats across all certifications. Questions are scenario-based and test practical judgment rather than rote recall.

Duration: Approximately 90 minutes for most certifications. The Cloud Security Professional (PCCSP) exam has 85 questions in 90 minutes — a notably faster pace.

Passing score: 860 on a scaled score of 300–1,000 for most certifications. The PCCSP uses a 70% threshold. Always verify with the official exam datasheet.

Validity: Most certifications are valid for 2 years. The PCCSP is valid for 3 years. Earning a higher-level credential in the same track extends active lower-level certifications by 2 years.

Certification Track Guide

New to cybersecurity? Start with the Cybersecurity Apprentice or Cybersecurity Practitioner ($150 each) — these foundational credentials have no prerequisites and provide the baseline for all three tracks.

Working with firewalls and SASE? Pursue the Network Security Professional, then add the NGFW Engineer, Network Security Analyst, SD-WAN Engineer, or SSE Engineer based on your daily role. Progress to the Network Security Architect for enterprise design leadership.

Working in a SOC? Start with the Security Operations Professional, then specialize with the XSIAM Analyst, XDR Analyst, XSIAM Engineer, XDR Engineer, or XSOAR Engineer based on which Cortex platform your team runs. The Security Operations Architect is the track's top credential.

Focused on cloud security? The Cloud Security Professional (PCCSP) is the primary cloud security certification, covering the full Cortex Cloud platform across posture, runtime, and application security.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all Palo Alto Networks practice tests on this site free?+
Yes. Every practice test across all sixteen Palo Alto Networks certifications on Security Practice Test is completely free. No account, registration, or payment is required. Select any test from any certification page and start practicing immediately.
What happened to the old Palo Alto Networks certifications like PCNSE, PCCSE, and PCDRA?+
These legacy certifications were retired in 2025. The PCDRA was retired April 30, 2025 (replaced by XDR Analyst and XDR Engineer). The PCNSE, PCCSE, and PCSAE were retired July 31, 2025 (replaced by NGFW Engineer, Cloud Security Professional, and XSOAR Engineer respectively). Active certifications remain valid until their original 2-year expiry date. New candidates must pursue the current role-based credentials.
Can Palo Alto Networks exams be taken online?+
No. As of August 2025, all Palo Alto Networks certification exams must be taken in person at an authorized Pearson VUE test center. Online remote proctoring is no longer available for any exam in the program. Schedule your appointment through the Pearson VUE portal and allow lead time for test center availability in your region.
How much do Palo Alto Networks certification exams cost?+
Foundational certifications (Cybersecurity Apprentice, Cybersecurity Practitioner) cost $150 USD. Professional certifications (Network Security Professional, Security Operations Professional, Cloud Security Professional) cost $200 USD. Specialist certifications cost $250 USD. Architect-level pricing should be verified at the Palo Alto Networks Pearson VUE store, as it is not published in the standard tier pricing. Regional taxes may apply.
Which certification should I pursue first?+
Choose your starting point based on your role. If you are new to cybersecurity, start with the Cybersecurity Practitioner. If you manage firewalls or network security, pursue the Network Security Professional and then the relevant Specialist. If you work in a SOC with Cortex products, start with the Security Operations Professional. If you focus on cloud security, the Cloud Security Professional is your primary target. The official Palo Alto Networks certification portal and each exam's datasheet will guide you further.
How long are Palo Alto Networks certifications valid?+
Most Palo Alto Networks certifications are valid for 2 years from the date you pass the exam. The Cloud Security Professional (PCCSP) is an exception at 3 years. Earning a higher-level certification in the same track automatically extends all active lower-level certifications in that track by an additional 2 years — making strategic progression through the track a valuable recertification strategy.
