How to use these tests in a study plan
Use the short sets to diagnose. Save the longer runs for when you need to practise the full exam structure under the clock.
Benchmark
Take two mixed sets before a major review session. Look for the audit stage or standard that keeps costing you questions.
Start mixed test 1 →Drill the weak area
Move into the focused test for that topic. Audit planning, evidence, certification context and conformity assessment need different kinds of reasoning.
Open a focused test →Run the full clock
When the gaps are smaller, switch to 40 questions in 105 minutes. That is where pacing and late-test decision quality become visible.

BSI currently lists the Lead Auditor course as five days. Its CQI and IRCA certified delivery develops the skills to lead, plan, manage and follow up ISMS audits in line with ISO 19011.
What the qualification is built around
The course is for people who already understand ISO/IEC 27001 requirements and want to move into leading ISMS audits. BSI’s published learning outcomes cover ISMS and management-system concepts, auditing, third-party certification, the auditor’s role and conformity assessment using ISO/IEC 27001/2, ISO 19011 and ISO/IEC 17021 where appropriate.
The current CQI and IRCA online Lead Auditor exam standardizes the assessment into five sections. The heaviest part is conducting the audit: 14 of the 40 questions and 45 of the 105 minutes sit there.
Current online exam format
Questions: 40 total.
Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes.
Sections: Five, with 6 / 6 / 6 / 14 / 8 questions.
Question formats: Multiple choice, multiple response, fill in the blanks, matching and sequencing.
Exam navigation: Once you move to the next question, you cannot go back and change the previous answer.
Reference material: The exam is open book. The associated ISO management-system requirements standard is needed for some questions.
Who BSI aims the course at
Prior knowledge: A detailed understanding of ISO/IEC 27001 requirements is expected.
Audit focus: Leading and managing ISMS audits, including second-party auditing and preparation for third-party assessment.
Typical candidates: Information-security auditors, quality and compliance professionals, consultants and practitioners moving into audit leadership.
Course duration: Five days for the Lead Auditor course.
Assessment timing: CQI and IRCA’s learner guide gives candidates 30 days from the last day of the course to take the online exam.
Current Lead Auditor exam section structure
The section split comes from the CQI and IRCA online exam guide for Lead Auditor courses. This is the structure your full-length practice should reproduce.
| Section | Current exam area | Questions | Recommended time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section 1 | Concepts and principles of Management Standards and Systems | 6 | 10 min |
| Section 2 | Audit concepts and auditor responsibilities | 6 | 10 min |
| Section 3 | Planning the audit | 6 | 10 min |
| Section 4 | Conducting the audit | 14 | 45 min |
| Section 5 | Reporting and closing out the audit | 8 | 30 min |
How these practice tests are written
Audit decisions, not loose trivia
The question pool is written around the published BSI learning outcomes and the current CQI and IRCA Lead Auditor exam structure. The useful questions are the ones that force you to identify the audit stage, judge evidence, separate a finding from an assumption, or choose the next auditor action.
No live exam questions are reproduced. The point is to practise the judgement the course is testing, not memorize somebody else’s paper.
What to pay attention to
- Know which requirement or audit principle the scenario is actually testing.
- Separate evidence from interpretation before deciding on a finding.
- Spend extra study time on conducting, reporting and closing out audits; those sections carry most of the current online exam.
- Practise moving forward decisively because the online exam does not let you return to a previous question.
Lead Auditor preparation tips
Study strategy
Learn ISO/IEC 27001 well enough that you can use it during an audit instead of hunting through clauses from scratch. The exam is open book, but the clock still punishes slow searching.
Study the audit as one flow: planning, evidence gathering, findings, reporting and follow-up. Isolated definitions make more sense once you know where they sit in that sequence.
Give Conducting the audit the most practice. It is 14 questions and carries the longest recommended time block in the current online exam.
Exam strategy
Read the role and audit stage before the answer options. A technically true statement can still be the wrong auditor action for that point in the process.
Use the standard as a reference, not as a substitute for preparation. Know where the major requirements live so an open-book check takes seconds.
Commit before clicking Next. The current CQI and IRCA online format does not allow you to navigate backwards to change an answer.
