How to use these tests in a CIPP/E study plan

Use the short tests while you are still learning. Save the long ones for the point where time and concentration become part of the problem.

1

Benchmark

Take two mixed sets before going back through your notes. Look for a pattern, not one bad question.

2

Drill the weak domain

If transfers, rights or accountability keep costing you marks, move to the matching domain test and stay there until the distinctions stop blurring together.

Run the full 150 minutes

Once the content is stable, sit a 90-question practice test without shortening the clock. That is where pacing problems show up.

About the IAPP CIPP/E exam

The current CIPP/E body of knowledge took effect on 1 September 2025. It covers European privacy law, GDPR application and the practical compliance issues privacy professionals handle at work.

What the credential covers

CIPP/E is IAPP's European privacy certification. The current body of knowledge covers pan-European and national data-protection law, the EU institutional framework, lawful processing, data-subject rights, international transfers, accountability, enforcement and compliance topics including employment, surveillance, marketing and technology.

The current outline also includes newer material where it intersects with privacy practice, including NIS2, the EU AI Act, transfer impact assessments, the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and dark patterns.

Exam format

Questions: 90 multiple-choice items. Some are scenario-based.

Duration: 2.5 hours. IAPP's store listing also includes a 15-minute break.

Scoring: Results are converted to a 100–500 scale. A score of 300 passes; 300 does not mean 60%.

Delivery: Pearson VUE test center or OnVUE remote proctoring.

Exam price: $550 USD.

Planning and maintenance

Study time: IAPP recommends planning for at least 30 hours.

Purchase window: The exam must be completed within one year of purchase.

Maintenance: Non-members pay a $250 certification maintenance fee for a two-year term. IAPP membership includes that fee.

Continuing education: The current CIPP/E study guide states a 20-credit annual continuing privacy education requirement.

Retakes: IAPP states that previously failed exams receive discounted retake pricing.

CIPP/E exam blueprint

IAPP publishes a minimum and maximum item range rather than a simple percentage for each domain. These are the current ranges in Body of Knowledge version 1.3.3.

DomainCurrent topicItems on exam
Domain IIntroduction to European Data Protection7–13
Domain IIEuropean Data Protection Law and Regulation18–28
Domain IIIEuropean Data Processing13–21
Domain IVEuropean Data Protection: Scope and Accountability8–18
Domain VCompliance with European Data Protection Law and Regulation8–16

The ranges are not fixed percentages. Different exam forms can contain different numbers within each published minimum and maximum.

How our CIPP/E practice tests are written

Current outline, not an old GDPR-only bank

The question sets follow the five-domain outline effective from September 2025, including the newer topics that now sit inside the CIPP/E body of knowledge.

Legal distinctions do the work

Good CIPP/E questions turn on close choices: controller versus processor, access versus portability, consent versus another lawful basis, or adequacy versus contractual transfer tools.

Short scenarios, not article-number trivia

The exam uses both knowledge and application. The practice sets mix direct concept checks with workplace situations involving notices, requests, vendors, transfers, cookies, monitoring and enforcement.

Timed at the real pace

Ninety questions in 150 minutes gives roughly 1 minute 40 seconds per item. A 20-question set therefore lands at about 33 minutes.

CIPP/E exam preparation

Study strategy

Start with Domain II. Its official range is 18–28 questions, the largest range in the current blueprint. Rights, security and core GDPR concepts deserve more time than a five-way equal split.

Learn contrasts in pairs. Put access beside portability. Put a DPIA beside a transfer impact assessment. Put the EDPB beside the EDPS. The wrong answer is often a real concept used in the wrong place.

Keep transfers current. Study the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, SCCs, BCRs, derogations and TIAs as current tools. Treat Safe Harbor and Privacy Shield as historical context.

Test-taking strategy

Find the legal issue before reading every option twice. Is the question about a right, a lawful basis, a role, an international transfer or a regulator? That first classification usually removes half the noise.

Watch absolute wording. Answers built around “always,” “automatically” and “never” are easy to over-accept in privacy law, where scope and context matter.

Budget the clock. A long scenario can eat three minutes without feeling long. Timed practice is what makes you notice it.
