Written to the current CIPM Body of Knowledge

The current IAPP study guide, effective September 2025, organizes CIPM coverage into six areas: developing a privacy-program framework, establishing governance, assessing data, protecting personal data, sustaining program performance, and responding to rights requests and incidents.

The live exam is split at the halfway point. Once the first half is submitted for the scheduled break, you cannot return to it. That makes pacing across the first 45 questions matter as much as pacing across the second 45.

The questions in these practice tests are original and were built against the current CIPM Body of Knowledge. No live IAPP exam questions are reproduced.

Inside a test

Ninety questions with the same structure every time

A short quiz can tell you whether you know a topic. A full 150-minute set tells you whether you can keep making good decisions after an hour and a half of governance, vendor, rights-request and incident scenarios.

How it's built

  • 90 questions per practice test
  • 80 single-answer questions
  • 10 Select TWO questions
  • Six current CIPM Body of Knowledge areas
  • Fixed 19 / 17 / 17 / 13 / 10 / 14 allocation
  • Ten separate sets, 900 questions in total

Under the clock

  • 150 minutes for 90 questions
  • Use 75 minutes as the halfway pacing check
  • Read for decision authority, scope and accountability
  • On Select TWO items, both selections matter
  • Do not treat 300 on the IAPP scale as 60%
  • Keep enough time for longer scenario stems

What comes back

  • An explanation is included for every question
  • Select TWO questions are scored all-or-nothing
  • The practice score uses the 100–500 scale with 300 as the pass line
  • Correct answers are tied to the current CIPM subject and topic structure
  • Every question in the bank carries an approved review status

One question, worked through

CIPM questions often turn on who owns the decision. The security, audit or procurement function may be relevant, but relevance is not the same as authority.

Area I · Developing a framework Medium Single answer

A loyalty team wants to combine purchase history with in-app behavior to create new customer segments. The privacy manager needs a working group that can make decisions about the use. Which stakeholder is MOST important in addition to privacy and marketing?

  • AThe data or product owner who can authorize how the combined customer data is used in the service
  • BUse the information-security lead as the decision owner because platform hardening protects the combined dataset, with marketing supplying the intended use requirements
  • CThe procurement manager responsible for marketing suppliers
  • DThe internal-audit manager responsible for periodic assurance

Why A

The working group needs someone with accountable authority over the data or product use being proposed. The other functions may handle personal information elsewhere, but they do not own the customer analytics decision at issue.

Why B is tempting

Information security is directly relevant to protecting the combined dataset. The question is about who can authorize the proposed use, though. Security ownership does not replace product or data ownership for that decision.

Question distribution

The same six-area allocation in every practice test

IAPP publishes its blueprint as ranges. These ten practice tests use one fixed 90-question allocation so test 2 and test 9 are built on the same distribution.

Questions

About the CIPM exam and these practice tests

The IAPP CIPM exam

How many questions are on the CIPM exam, and how long is it?

The exam has 90 questions and a 2.5-hour time limit. IAPP offers a 15-minute break halfway through. The exam is divided into two 45-question halves, and once the first half is submitted you cannot return to it.

What score do I need to pass CIPM?

300 on IAPP's 100–500 score scale. IAPP states that 300 does not represent 60%. Raw correct-answer totals are converted to the common score scale.

What kinds of questions are on the exam?

All IAPP certification exam questions are multiple choice. Some are scenario-based. Questions may have one correct answer or multiple correct answers, and multi-select items award no partial credit unless the exact required responses are selected.

How much does the CIPM exam cost?

The IAPP store lists the CIPM exam at US$550. That price was checked on 7 October 2026.

If I fail CIPM, how soon can I retake it?

You can purchase another exam after the failed result appears in your MyIAPP profile. IAPP will not let a retake candidate schedule the next appointment for a date sooner than seven days after the prior attempt.

How is CIPM maintained after I pass?

IAPP certification runs on a two-year term. The current certification maintenance fee is US$250 per term, or maintenance is included with IAPP membership, currently US$295 annually. IAPP also requires continuing privacy education to keep the credential active.
