The exam structure

What the current Lead Auditor online exam asks you to handle

BSI currently offers a five-day CQI and IRCA Certified ISO/IEC 27001:2022 Lead Auditor course. The CQI and IRCA online exam guide sets the Lead Auditor assessment at 40 questions in 1 hour 45 minutes across five content areas.

Built around the parts that matter for audit judgment

The official content areas move from management-system concepts into audit responsibility, planning, fieldwork, reporting and close-out. Conducting the audit is the largest section at 14 of the 40 questions, followed by reporting and closing out at eight.

These practice tests keep that same 6 / 6 / 6 / 14 / 8 distribution. The question bank concentrates on the response formats the site can reproduce cleanly: single-answer questions and clearly marked Select TWO questions.

The real online exam also uses fill-in, matching and sequencing items. Those formats are not flattened into ordinary multiple choice here. The focus stays on evidence, auditor decisions, conformity assessment and what happens next in the audit process.

Inside a test

Forty questions, one clock, the same section pressure

The exam gives different amounts of time to different sections. Your practice set keeps the full 105-minute window so you can learn when to move and when a scenario is worth the extra minute.

How it is built

  • 40 questions in 105 minutes
  • Five sections in a 6 / 6 / 6 / 14 / 8 split
  • 36 single-answer questions
  • 4 clearly marked Select TWO questions
  • Four answer options on every item

Under the clock

  • One timed 105-minute practice run
  • Linear question flow
  • Scenario-led auditor decisions throughout the bank
  • More questions devoted to conducting the audit than any other section
  • 75% used as the practice-readiness target

What you learn from it

  • Whether audit concepts hold up under time pressure
  • Where planning turns into weak evidence collection
  • How well you separate criteria, evidence and conclusions
  • Why a plausible distractor is still the wrong audit action
  • Which section deserves the next round of revision
Worked sample

A real question from the approved Test 1 bank

The point is not clause-number recall. It is whether you can distinguish an operating management system from a pile of security controls when the evidence is incomplete.

Concepts and principlesSingle answerEasy

A SaaS company has purchased several security tools, but management cannot show defined information-security objectives, a repeatable risk process, or routine evaluation of ISMS performance. Which evidence would BEST demonstrate that the company operates a management system rather than a collection of isolated controls?

  • ADefined ISMS objectives, responsibilities, risk processes, and performance evaluation
  • BA list of each relevant security product currently deployed by the technical teams
  • CA penetration-test report showing that no critical vulnerabilities were found last month
  • DA statement from the security manager that the organization follows industry best practice

Why A

A management system is demonstrated by coordinated processes, responsibilities, objectives, risk-based direction, and evaluation rather than by individual technologies alone. It can show a point-in-time technical result, but it does not establish an operating ISMS. For that reason, the penetration-test report is not the appropriate audit response.

Five content areas

The current 40-question Lead Auditor distribution

The official guide gives both a question count and a recommended time allocation for each section. Conducting the audit gets 14 questions and 45 minutes, so that is where the largest block of practice belongs.

The five section counts add to 40 questions and the recommended times add to the full 105-minute exam window.

Questions

About the exam and these practice tests

The Lead Auditor exam

How many questions are in the CQI and IRCA Lead Auditor online exam?
The current CQI and IRCA online exam guide lists 40 questions for Lead Auditor exams.
How long is the Lead Auditor exam?
One hour 45 minutes, or 105 minutes. The guide allocates 10 minutes to each of the first three sections, 45 minutes to Conducting the audit, and 30 minutes to Reporting and closing out the audit.
What question types appear in the online exam?
The official guide lists multiple choice, multiple response, fill-in-the-blanks, matching and sequencing. The last two sections also include audit scenarios that ask you to evaluate the situation and choose the correct course of action.
Is the online exam open book?
Yes. Course notes and the relevant ISO management-system requirements standard can be used. Internet searching is not permitted during the exam.
Can I go back to an earlier question?
No. The official online format is forward-only: after you answer a question and click Next, you cannot navigate back to change it.
What are the five content areas?
Concepts and principles of Management Standards and Systems; Audit concepts and auditor responsibilities; Planning the audit; Conducting the audit; and Reporting and closing out the audit.

These practice tests

Do these full-length tests use the same 40-question structure?
Yes. Every test contains 40 questions and uses the same 6 / 6 / 6 / 14 / 8 split across the five exam sections.
Do the practice tests include every official online item type?
They focus on the response types this test engine supports directly: single-answer and clearly marked Select TWO questions. Fill-in, matching and sequencing are not converted into artificial multiple-choice items.
How many Select TWO questions are in each test?
Four. The remaining 36 questions are single-answer items, and every question has four answer options.
What does the 75% target mean?
It is the practice-readiness benchmark used on these full-length tests. It is a site target for practice scoring rather than the official CQI and IRCA grading rule.
Do the questions include explanations?
Yes. The question bank includes an explanation with each item so you can review the reasoning behind the correct answer instead of stopping at the letter key.
Which option gives the lowest price per test?
The All 10 tests pack. It gives you 400 questions across ten separate full-length practice tests at the lowest per-test cost of the three purchase options.
Best value pack

Use the early tests to find where your audit decisions break down. Keep the later ones for complete 105-minute runs when the aim is simple: finish the paper without losing discipline in the long scenario sections.
