What CREST sets on the current CPSA exam

CPSA is a closed-book written multiple-choice exam. It tests practitioner-level knowledge of infrastructure and web security assessment, below the depth of CREST's CRT and CCT qualifications.

Built around the published syllabus

CREST's current CPSA syllabus is divided into ten knowledge groups. They run from assessment management and core technical skills through Windows, Unix, web testing and databases.

The exam is knowledge based. CREST describes it as testing whether a candidate can assess operating systems and common network services, perform basic infrastructure and web application vulnerability scanning, and interpret the results well enough to locate security weaknesses.

These practice tests stay at that practitioner level. The bank uses concise technical questions, short scenarios and evidence interpretation instead of turning CPSA into an advanced exploit-development exam.

Inside a test

Two hours changes the way a 120-question paper feels

A short quiz can expose a weak topic. A full CPSA run tests whether you can keep the pace when the questions move from DNS to Windows, Unix, web testing and databases without warning.

How it's built

  • 120 questions in every full-length set
  • Four answer options with one keyed answer
  • All ten syllabus knowledge groups represented
  • All 76 syllabus skill areas used across each set
  • 30 easy, 60 medium and 30 hard questions

Under the clock

  • 120 minutes for the complete practice test
  • About one minute per question on average
  • Single-answer questions throughout the bank
  • No choose-TWO or multi-response items in this series
  • 72 correct answers is the practice pass target

What the explanations do

  • Every question carries a 2–4 sentence explanation
  • The keyed answer is tied back to the tested concept
  • The strongest distractor is addressed when it matters
  • Legacy syllabus items are explained in their proper context
  • The aim is to fix the distinction, not just reveal a letter
See the question style

Short, technical, and built around what the evidence means

CPSA does not need every item turned into a long story. The better questions are often compact: a protocol, an observed result, then one decision.

Background Information GatheringDNSSingle answer

During reconnaissance, a tester sends an AXFR request to a target's authoritative DNS server and the transfer succeeds. What is the main security concern?

  • AThe zone's DNS records can be disclosed, revealing useful host and naming information.
  • BThe DNS server will automatically replace its authoritative records with the requester's records.
  • CThe successful transfer proves that all DNS traffic is encrypted with an obsolete cipher.
  • DThe server can no longer answer recursive DNS queries for external domains.

Why A

A successful zone transfer can expose the records held for the zone, which may reveal hostnames, mail systems and other useful reconnaissance data. It does not grant permission to rewrite the zone, and it says nothing about DNS encryption or recursive-query behaviour.

Coverage

Every practice test covers all ten CPSA knowledge groups

The CPSA written exam contains 120 multiple-choice questions and lasts two hours. That gives you an average of one minute per question.
What score do you need to pass CPSA?
CREST publishes a 60% pass mark. With 120 marks available, that means at least 72 correct answers. Each correct answer is worth one mark and CREST does not deduct marks for incorrect answers.
Is the CPSA exam closed book?
Yes. CREST states that CPSA is a completely closed-book exam. Reference material, internet access and electronic devices are not permitted during the examination.
What topics are in the CPSA syllabus?
Technical Syllabus v2.5 contains ten knowledge groups: Soft Skills and Assessment Management; Core Technical Skills; Background Information Gathering and Open Source; Networking Equipment; Microsoft Windows Security Assessment; Unix Security Assessment; Web Technologies; Web Testing Methodologies; Web Testing Techniques; and Databases.
How soon can I retake CPSA after an unsuccessful attempt?
CREST's current CPSA guidance allows an unsuccessful candidate to retake the exam seven days after the original exam date.
How much does the CREST Practitioner exam cost?

These practice tests

How closely do these practice tests match the CPSA format?
Each practice test contains 120 questions on a 120-minute clock and covers all ten CPSA syllabus groups. This bank uses four options and one correct answer per question.
Do these tests include explanations?
Yes. Every question carries a 2–4 sentence explanation that states why the keyed answer is correct and addresses the strongest distractor when that distinction matters.
Do these tests use choose-TWO or multiple-answer questions?
No. This CPSA practice bank is single-answer only. Every question has one keyed answer.
Are all ten tests built to the same difficulty mix?
Yes. Every 120-question set uses 30 easy, 60 medium and 30 hard questions, with the same ten-group allocation throughout the series.
Where do the practice questions come from?
They are original practice questions written against CREST Practitioner Security Analyst Technical Syllabus v2.5. The bank follows the published skill areas and CPSA's concise multiple-choice style rather than reproducing live exam items.
