What Palo Alto Networks currently sets
The official November 2025 datasheet defines a specialist-level, 90-minute multiple-choice exam focused on operating and administering Palo Alto Networks next-generation firewalls.
| Certification level | Specialist |
| Duration | 90 minutes |
| Format | Multiple-choice questions |
| Language | English |
| Exam fee | $250 USD |
| Delivery | In-person at Pearson VUE test centers |
| Passing score | 860 on a 300–1000 scale |
| Validity | 2 years |
| Recommended experience | 2–3 years in IT security, including 2 years with Palo Alto Networks NGFW solutions |
Written to the current objectives
The blueprint is unusually concentrated. PAN-OS Networking Configuration takes 40% of the score, and PAN-OS Device Setting Configuration takes another 40%. Integration and Automation makes up the remaining 20%.
That means the exam is less about naming firewall features and more about configuring them in context. Interfaces, zones, routing, HA, GlobalProtect, logging, certificates, User-ID, Panorama, APIs and deployment automation all sit inside the published objectives.
The certification is aimed at experienced network security engineers and firewall administrators. Palo Alto Networks recommends hands-on time with its NGFW products before taking it.
Sixty questions gives you enough room to expose a weak configuration area
A short quiz can tell you whether you remember a command. Ninety minutes tells you whether routing, HA, GlobalProtect and Panorama still make sense after an hour under pressure.
How it's built
- 60 questions in each practice test
- 90-minute time limit
- 24 questions from PAN-OS Networking Configuration
- 24 from PAN-OS Device Setting Configuration
- 12 from Integration and Automation
- Mostly single-answer questions, plus clearly marked two-answer items
Under the clock
- 90 minutes for 60 questions works out to 90 seconds per question
- Configuration scenarios take longer than recall items, so bank time early
- Two-answer questions are scored all-or-nothing
- Use a first pass for clean wins, then spend the remaining time on the hard routing and automation items
What comes back
- Every question in the bank carries a keyed correct answer
- Each item has an explanation tied to the configuration or control being tested
- The explanation is where a plausible distractor gets separated from the best answer
- Review misses by objective, then retest on a fresh set
The distractor should look reasonable until you apply the routing rule
This question comes from the current NGFW Engineer practice-test bank. It tests BGP path selection, not vocabulary.
Two upstream BGP providers advertise equivalent reachability, but the enterprise wants its edge firewall to prefer one provider for outbound traffic without changing the preference advertised to external autonomous systems. Which BGP attribute is the BEST fit?
- APrepend the enterprise AS number to routes learned from the preferred provider.
- BSet a higher Local Preference on routes learned from the preferred provider.
- CSet a lower origin type on routes exported to the nonpreferred provider.
- DIncrease the MED on routes learned from the preferred provider and redistribute them into OSPF.
Why B
Local Preference is used inside an autonomous system to influence the preferred outbound BGP path. A higher value makes the preferred provider win without advertising that preference to external autonomous systems.
Why A is the tempting answer
AS-path prepending is a real BGP traffic-engineering tool, but it is mainly used to influence how other autonomous systems choose an inbound path. The requirement here is outbound path choice inside the enterprise AS.
Two domains carry four-fifths of the exam score
Networking and device settings are each 40%. On a 60-question practice test, that maps cleanly to 24 questions from each, leaving 12 for Integration and Automation.
| Domain | Official weight | Questions per 60-question test |
|---|---|---|
| 1. PAN-OS Networking Configuration | 40% | 24 |
| 2. PAN-OS Device Setting Configuration | 40% | 24 |
| 3. Integration and Automation | 20% | 12 |
